Defensive driving, according to the National Safety Council’s Defensive Driving Course, is “driving to save lives, time and money, in spite of the conditions around you and the action of others.” In other words, defensive driving goes beyond the basic rules of the road and mechanics of driving in order to reduce the risk of driving. Defensive driving takes into account adverse conditions, anticipates dangerous situations and mistakes of other drivers. This type of “defensive driving” is taught most often to those in special government agencies, non-profit organizations and private schools. There are certain basic rules and specific driving techniques that are taught in a defensive driving course. In some U.S. states, taking a defensive driving course may qualify the student for a discount on car insurance. It’s also sometimes taken as a way to dismiss traffic tickets. Defensive driving classes can be taken both online and in the classroom. The course is generally about six hours long.
